Artist Statement
I am a landscape artist, and I work within the expanded field of drawing, encompassing sculpture and installation.
My work is about coastlines and natural environments; however, I draw in elements of human presence through the imagery of architectural sites. My work is cobbled together built of wrangum and detritus. Intrinsic to my work is the mirroring of a landscapes shifting geography and fragility; the natural forces that affect a place.
Through impermanent fixtures, dubious constructions and questionable adhesive tools like electrical tape and staples I like to play with the apprehension of knowing something has the possibility to collapse, tumble or decay. Much like the landscape itself. My works often have flaking paint, smudged marks, and fraying edges, over the lifetime of a work this becomes more pronounced like wrinkles on our skin.
Geology and geography infiltrate my works conceptualising my drawings and structures. I find the vernacular surrounding erosion, works as an activator for sculptures and installations. Words such as slip, pile, creep and deposit are full of interpretations that I apply to materials and spaces. I also work within distinct parameters of geographical statistics, in doing this I see myself not just as an artist but researcher, historian and scientist.
